Getting to Brno Airport
Brno Tuřany Airport is a small international airport that mostly handles charter flights, along with several scheduled services. While hardly comparable to Prague or Vienna in terms of passenger volume or route network, Brno does offer some convenient connections. Combined with its proximity to downtown, no congestion and a straightforward passenger experience, it may very well be the most comfortable gateway to the South Moravian wine country, but also Prague, Olomouc, Vienna and Bratislava. As of early 2018, bmi regional operates a twice-daily direct service to Munich on weekdays, plus one return flight on Sundays. These flights are scheduled to facilitate connections onto Lufthansa’s long-haul network. In addition, Ryanair flies from Brno to London Stansted, while other low cost carriers tend to add flights seasonally.
Best of all, getting there is super easy.
Closer Than Expected
Part of the airport’s charm comes from the fact that it’s located just 15 minutes (12 km) from the very heart of Brno. The airport is served by the E76 public bus, which runs every 30 minutes and departs conveniently from the Central Train Station (Hlavní nádraží). Board the bus at the trolleybus loop located halfway from the tram hub and the old bus station in front of the Grand Hotel. At a leisurely pace, getting to the bus stop shouldn’t take more than five minutes from either the train or bus terminals.
Travel time from downtown to the airport is clocked at 18 minutes, though morning and afternoon rush hours tend to increase that noticeably, even up to 45 minutes due to traffic jams.
Like the rest of Brno’s municipal public transit, the route is operated by DPMB and is served by low-entry, wheelchair accessible buses with some added features. Services are scheduled to depart on the top and bottom of the hour, at :00 and :30 throughout the day, though heavy traffic may occasionally cause small irregularities.
Hourly Service at Night
At night (10pm – 5am), the airport is served by the N89 bus, running every 60 minutes, always on the hour. Travel time is reliably consistent at 22 minutes. Careful though: at night, buses depart from the tram stop directly in front of the train station building, which serves as a central interchange for all night routes. Buses gather here several minutes in advance and all depart at exactly the same moment. There are four rows of buses, so finding yours may be tricky. The N89 always departs from track no. 4, but be sure to leave extra time to safely locate and board your bus.
Tickets and Fares
A ride from the Central Train Station and Tuřany Airport covers fare zones 100 and 101 and costs CZK 25 (€1). Get your ticket in advance from the Czech Railways cash desk or from an orange ticket machine, which are quite ubiquitous. Enter the bus through any door, just remember to validate your ticket by stamping it immediately upon boarding. As an alternative, you can pay your fare aboard all daytime E76 airport buses, by using a contactless card or cash (CZK and euros accepted). Either way, your fare will be the same.
If you’re staying in Brno for a longer time and have been using a transit pass to move around, these are also valid on E76 and N89 airport services. Just watch your pass’ validity.
